Vostok-Europe LUNOKHOD

LUNOKHOD (Moon rover) — the first-ever planet research vehicle which was successfully working at a surface of other heavenly body — the Moon. Belongs to a series of the Soviet remotely-controlled self-propelled devices for Moon research. Intended for studying of features of a lunar surface, radioactive and x-ray space radiation on the Moon, a chemical composition and properties of soil. The mass of a planet research vehicle made 756 kg, length with the open solar battery — 4,42 m, width — 2,15 m, height — 1,92 m. The first moon rover was delivered to the Moon surface on November 17, 1970 by the Soviet interplanetary station "Luna-17" and worked on its surface till September 29, 1971 (this day the last successful communication session with the device was carried out).


Within the first three months of the planned work besides surface studying the device carried out also the applied program during which fulfilled search of the area of landing of a lunar cabin. After implementation of the program the moon rover worked on the Moon three times more than the originally calculated resource (3 months). During stay on the Moon surface "Moon rover-1" passed 10 540 m, transferred to Earth of 211 lunar panoramas and 25 thousand photos. More than in five hundred points on the route of movement physicomechanical properties of a blanket of soil were studied, and in 25 points the analysis of its chemical composition is carried out.
